Mosquito Protection

The mosquito species found in Singapore that are the vectors of the diseases Dengue fever and Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever, Zika Virus are the Aedes aegypti (commonly known as Asian Tiger mosquito) and the Aedes albopictus. Both species are generally identified as black mosquitoes with prominent white stripes on the legs and body. Aedes spp. mosquitoes are known to be day-biters, with optimal biting times at dawn and dusk. They usually breed in clear water pools, commonly found in drains, over-watered flower pots, roof gutters, discarded tyres, plant axils (e.g. in the axils of the Traveller’s palm) and other artificial containers left outdoors.

The external mosquito protection program is designed to protect your love ones and yourself from the deadly mosquitoes around your home. Treatment is administered via a water based misting method. The mist simulates rain, and thus will be able to reach all possible microhabitats within the area effectively.

What is ULV Misting?

  • ULV is defined as the Ultra-Low Volume application per unit area/space
  • Misting is done through a Backpack ULV mister to generate fog droplets by using a high volume of air at low pressure.
  • Such a system enables droplets of a more precise size to be generated.  The minute droplets (aerosols) remain suspended in the air for hours simulating rain droplets to ensure a uniform coverage of all areas including hard to reach places, and that of leaves and bushes in the open air.
  • In this manner lethal contact with the mosquitoes that are to be controlled is maintained for prolonged periods.
  • The ability to be able to calibrate the machine to produce droplets of the optimum size for the type of chemical being used make ULV spraying the method of choice whenever possible.

A NEA approved water-based chemical is dispensed into hard-to-reach macro and micro habitats of the mosquitoes, such as roof gutters, tree holes, leaf litter in the form of ULV (Ultra Low Volume) droplets that represent rain droplets. This enables the mist to hang in the air and gradually settle down in the macro and micro habitats. Other areas that would be covered by the mist typically include the scupper drains, potted plants, perimeter drains, and stagnant water present inside unused receptacles. The ULV mist can reach mosquito breeding areas up to approximately 15 meters from the applicator.
