A sudden cluster of winged insects around a window, light fitting or balcony can cause understandable concern. When comparing drywood termites versus flying ants, the difference matters: one may point to timber being damaged from within, while the other may simply be a seasonal ant swarm. Both deserve a closer look, but they do not call for the same response.

The good news is that a few clear physical clues can help you make an initial identification. The more useful question, however, is what the insects – and the signs left behind – are telling you about the property.

Drywood termites versus flying ants: the key differences

Winged drywood termites and flying ants are reproductive insects. They leave an established colony to mate and begin new colonies, usually when weather conditions are warm and humid. In Singapore, swarming can happen after rain or during particularly humid periods, sometimes in impressive numbers.

At first glance, both appear as small, dark, winged insects. Look more closely at the body shape, antennae and wings.

Drywood termite swarmers have straight, bead-like antennae. Their bodies are broadly uniform from head to abdomen, with no pronounced narrow waist. They carry two pairs of wings that are similar in length and shape, often extending well past the body. The wings are delicate and may be shed soon after landing.

Flying ants have distinctly bent or elbowed antennae and a clearly pinched waist between the thorax and abdomen. Their front wings are longer than their rear wings. Depending on the ant species, they may also look darker, shinier or more visibly segmented than termite swarmers.

A photo can be useful, but tiny features are easy to misread. If you can safely collect a few specimens in a clean container or take close photographs beside a coin for scale, a pest management technician can identify them more reliably.

Why discarded wings deserve attention

Piles of matching, translucent wings are one of the most commonly noticed signs of a termite swarm. After pairing, termite swarmers deliberately shed their wings. You may find them on window ledges, near door frames, beneath light fittings or close to timber furnishings.

Flying ants can also shed wings, so wings alone are not proof of termites. Their location and frequency make a difference. A single outdoor swarm that disappears quickly may be a normal ant event. Repeated wings indoors, especially around a timber feature, built-in cabinet, skirting board or false ceiling, warrant a professional inspection.

Drywood termites live inside dry timber and do not need soil contact. That means activity may begin in furniture, door frames, wooden flooring, decorative beams, cupboards or stored timber. The colony can remain hidden for a long time because the insects travel and feed within the wood rather than building obvious mud tubes.

Look for signs beyond the insects

The insects you see are only part of the picture. Drywood termites often leave behind small, hard pellets known as frass. These pellets can resemble fine grains of sand, coffee grounds or tiny wood-coloured beads. They may collect below a small exit hole in timber, on a shelf, floor or inside a cupboard.

Other possible signs include blistered or hollow-sounding timber, small pinholes, loose veneer, sagging sections of wood and doors or drawers that begin sticking without an obvious reason. None of these signs confirms drywood termites by itself. Moisture damage, age and other timber pests can create similar symptoms. That is why a proper diagnosis is more valuable than guessing based on one clue.

With flying ants, the priority is locating the colony if it is indoors or repeatedly emerging from the same gap. Ants may nest in wall voids, around plumbing penetrations, beneath flooring or in external landscaping. They can be a nuisance and may contaminate food areas, but their presence does not automatically mean your building structure is being eaten.

What to do when you see a swarm

Avoid reaching straight for an aerosol spray. Spraying visible insects may reduce the immediate nuisance, but it rarely identifies or resolves the source colony. In the case of termites, disturbing the area or applying an unsuitable product can also make assessment harder.

Instead, vacuum up insects after taking photographs or retaining a small sample. Note the date, room and exact point where they appeared. Check nearby window frames, wooden fixtures and furniture for wings, pellets or small holes. Do not poke tools into suspicious timber or remove panels yourself, as this can damage finishes and conceal useful evidence.

If the swarm is outdoors and does not recur indoors, monitor the area. If insects emerge inside, wings continue to appear, or there are signs of timber damage, arrange an inspection promptly. Early assessment is particularly worthwhile in properties with extensive timber fittings, older wooden furniture or valuable joinery.

Why drywood termite treatment is not one-size-fits-all

Drywood termite control depends on where the colony is, how widespread the activity is and the type of timber affected. A targeted treatment may be suitable for a localised infestation in an accessible item or fixture. More extensive activity may require a broader treatment plan, repair work or ongoing monitoring.

The right approach starts with inspection. An experienced technician assesses the affected area, looks for evidence of active infestation and considers hidden voids and neighbouring timber. Thermal imaging and other inspection methods can support the assessment, but they are not substitutes for trained interpretation. Heat patterns can indicate anomalies, yet moisture, electrical equipment and construction details also affect what is seen.

For homes, the aim is to remove the infestation while protecting occupants, furnishings and finishes wherever possible. In commercial settings – especially hospitality, food-related operations, pharmaceutical environments and marine vessels – treatment also needs to fit hygiene requirements, access controls and operational schedules.

Repair water leaks promptly, as dampness can worsen timber condition even though drywood termites do not require soil moisture. Seal obvious gaps around frames and service entries where practical, and avoid storing untreated wood or cardboard in humid, poorly ventilated areas.

Routine checks are useful after a swarm. Inspect the edges and undersides of cabinets, timber skirting, door frames and stored wooden items. If you find pellets or repeated wing deposits, do not wait for visible structural damage before seeking advice.

When to call for an inspection

Call for professional help when winged insects are emerging indoors, discarded wings appear in the same place more than once, pellets are found beneath timber, or wood sounds hollow and shows small holes. It is also sensible to arrange an assessment before buying or renovating a property with substantial timber features.

The distinction between drywood termites and flying ants is not just a matter of insect identification. It is an opportunity to act on evidence rather than anxiety. Keep a sample or clear photograph, record where the insects appeared, and let a qualified inspection determine whether your property needs treatment or simply sensible monitoring.
